Naval Air Station Whidbey Island is one of the primary naval air stations situated in between Washington DC and Oak Harbor in US. This primary naval aviation station lies across Pacific Northwest and it is a main training center for all types of Navy tactical electronic attack units. There are more than 4 P-3 Orion Maritime Patrol squadrons as well as this place is filled with two more Fleet Reconnaissance squadrons.


Naval Air Station Whidbey Island was institutionalized on 21 September 1942 at the time World War 2. During the Second World War, Commander William B. Ault was one of the missing military personnel at the time of Coral Sea Battle. In his memory, the majority of area is named as Ault Field. The actual location of this area is about 3 miles from Oak Harbor.

Seaplane Base is the name of the remaining area of Whidbey Island. This place is home to the Navy Exchange and DeCA Commissary. Majority of the housing is located in this part of the island. There is an extra satellite airfield known as Naval Outline Landing Field Coupeville. Its distance from Ault Field is about nine miles.

This location is controlled by Commanding Officer of NASWI. It is mainly used for Field Carrier Landing Practice (FCLP) for jet airplanes. This naval station is also the home for variety of aircrafts like EP-3E ARIES II, EA-6B Prowler, C-9 Skytrain and EA-18G Growler as well as MH-60S helicopters, etc.

Along with all these military units, Naval Air Station Whidbey Island also has other tactical units like Search and Rescue units and flying three Sikorsky MH-60S Nighthawks, etc. This Search and Rescue unit works 24 hours day and night to provide rescue support to the people of greater Pacific Northwest community as well as Department of Defense personnel.

There are more than 50 tenant commands situated at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island to provide support for medical and training services. Â Naval Air Station Whidbey Island is continually acting as a center stage for all types of Naval Air Reserve operations and the related training in the area.
